Saved Monitor Lizard at Tourism Spot in South-Central Vietnam Averted Endangerment
The lizard weighs approximately five kilograms.
Pham Minh Nhut, vice-chairman of the Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa Tourism Association, stated on Wednesday that employees at the Dac Nhan Tam tourist site in Dien Xuan Commune, under Dien Khanh District, discovered the lizard four days ago.
The employees retrieved the monitor from the lake and took care of it.
They promptly reported the situation to the Dien Khanh forest protection division and the Dien Xuan Commune administration.
“The management board of the tourist site will collaborate with rangers to release the lizard into the Hon Ba Nature Reserve this weekend,” stated Nhut.
The clouded monitor has a gray body with numerous yellow spots, according to the Dien Khanh forest protection division.
The clouded monitor, scientifically known as Varanus nebulosus, is classified in Group IB, the list of endangered species of forest animals that are strictly forbidden for exploitation and commercial purposes, according to the division.
These types of lizards are commonly found in Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, the lizard inhabits Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Kon Tum, and Gia Lai Provinces.
