HCMC Strengthens Ties with Portugal’s Porto City


During a business trip to Portugal, a delegation from the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, led by Vice Chairman Duong Anh Duc, met with Porto Mayor Rui Moreira, according to VNA.


Ho Chi Minh City and Porto City in Portugal signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the two cities for the period of 2023-2025.

The MoU aims to enhance collaboration in culture, tourism, economy, trade, urban upgrading, and heritage conservation.


Both cities will facilitate exchanges and sharing of experiences among their football teams and clubs, and encourage departments and agencies to increase cooperation.


Vice Chairman Duc expressed his hope that the MoU will strengthen the partnership between the two cities, which are both economic hubs, especially in the areas of economy, culture, tourism, and innovation. This will contribute to promoting ties between Vietnam and Portugal.


Mayor Moreira believes that the agreement will establish an effective economic partnership and enhance cooperation in tourism and urban upgrading. He also highlighted the traditional relations between Vietnam and Portugal and the growing bilateral partnership in recent years.


The leaders of both cities pointed out the potential for cooperation in various fields, such as tourism, cultural heritage preservation, tertiary education, and science and technology.


During the visit, the HCM City delegation also visited historical and architectural sites in Porto, including the ancient market of Bolhão and the Matadouro ancient street, to learn from the city’s experiences. They also met with the University of Porto, one of Europe’s top universities.

As part of the “Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City Festival in Porto,” more than 100 enterprises from both countries participated in activities promoting trade, investment, tourism, and artistic performances. The festival aims to enhance exchanges and cooperation between Vietnam and Portugal, including the cities of Ho Chi Minh City and Porto, according to NDO.


The Economic Cooperation Forum between Ho Chi Minh City and Porto also took place, providing an opportunity for businesses to learn about the investment and business environment of both cities and establish connections.

The festival also featured special art performances by artists from Ho Chi Minh City and Porto, giving local people and visitors a taste of Vietnamese culture. The exhibition “Ho Chi Minh City – Development and Integration” showcased Vietnamese products and tourist destinations.


Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal, has a rich historical and cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
